Dermal filler injections can be very effective at reversing aging by giving your face youthful plumpness and improving your lips. However, some recipients are not happy with the results of particular filler injections. The results of the injection diminish over time, but there are some ways you may remove the injection early.

Removable vs. Permanent Injections

Some dermal filler injections are temporary and others are permanent. If you are concerned with whether your injection is temporary or permanent, bring this up with your cosmetic surgeon and they can help you determine which option is best for you.

Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

A hyaluronic acid filler can be removed by using hyaluronidase. This dissolves the hyaluronic acid particles to fix problems such as:

  • Swelling
  • Infections
  • Overfilling
  • Unsatisfying results
  • Irregular texture

If the filler has irregular texture, you may be able to correct it with a massage. However, in some cases, the filler doesn't respond to a massage and you might wish to have the filler dissolved. The cosmetic surgeon can control how much filler is removed so you can get closer to the results you wanted. In some cases, you may need another filler treatment to achieve your goals.

Steroid Injections

Hyaluronidase cannot be used with certain types of fillers and your cosmetic surgeon might instead recommend a steroid injection. You may also need your cosmetic surgeon to strategically place more filler to improve your condition.

Remedies for Permanent Dermal Fillers

While you may not be able to remove a permanent dermal filler, there are often ways that you can correct the problem. Massaging the dermal filler can improve its appearance. Your cosmetic surgeon will instruct you on how to massage the filler. Also, when a dermal filler is "permanent," this really only means that you cannot remove it. However, these fillers do not last forever and some are gone after six months.

There are some fillers that are effectively permanent because they are designed to resist absorption into your body. Therefore, before using one of these fillers, consult with your plastic surgeon about what can be done if you are not happy with the results.

The Right Results the First Time

Fortunately, when you choose a great cosmetic surgeon, you may receive the right results the first time. Then, you won't have to worry about needing to remove or replace your fillers because you will be satisfied with your more youthful appearance.
